VIP Status

Monday I spent I the day watching the adult professionals and the U16 Barcelona group here at CEFAR. Learned some new drills that we, in Canada, won't be able to do!

When Jorge returned from Sante Fe we went to Velez Sarsfield, last year's champions of Argentina, to watch them play against Gimnasia. Apparently Jorge knows all of Buenos Aires because it took us so much time to walk through the crowd outside the stadium because everyone was waiting to greet him. For those of you unfamiliar it is custom for all people to greet by putting their heads side by side facing each other and either kiss the side of the head or atleast pretend to. So far, I have been kissed by many men, women, children and a dog!

We bypassed all the lines to get in and walked into the lobby of this massive stadium. Within seconds we heard shouting and screaming as police raced past and then they appeared fighting with a giant man dressed in different team colors. Him and his friends got into the home area and started to fight with local fans. Jorge told me to back away but we were quickly escorted by stadium staff into a private, tiny all metal box. It turned out to be an elevator which took us up to the floor for the private boxes.

I was introduced to the star of Velez, Fabian Cubero, who was suspended for the game because of yellow cards. We posed for a quick photo before the press mobbed him.

The game was great, the only difference watching in the private box was that the crazy fans wore suites and smoked cigars the entire game!
